16 BIT LOLITAS

It was in 1955, in a small club in a desolate mountain village in the Jordanian hills that totally nothing happened that was or is in any way relevant to this biography of the 16 Bit Lolita's. Therefore this whole introduction is actually totally nonsensical and should be ignored. Let's start over again.. The 16 Bit Lolita's are Ariaan Olieroock & Peter Kriek. Both with a firm background in religious choir music and country they decided in 2003 to try and do something new. After 10 Grammies for their latest album entitled: 'Lord we miss the groove!', they decided to reset their careers and started making dance music.

After moving from New York to Amsterdam, they instantly started working on a new 'dance' sound. In the beginning it was hard to remove all the country elements and that occasional 'Sanctus' that Peter always seemed to want to slip in. It was inevitable that a new way of thinking about music and about music production had to be developed.

But soon they got the hang of it and the quality of their dance music increased dramatically. The first few releases on Deep records and Extrema records featured such well known tracks like: (Lord) Take my life, (put your faith) Put it in (the Lord), Trading places (in the confession booth). It was clear that they had left their religious/country/choir careers and had fully entered the world of dance music!

A string of releases followed on such labels as: Yoshitoshi, Alternative Route (to heaven), Release (yourself to the Lord) records, Sadie records, Plastic Fantastic, Nu Republic (of the Lord), Armada, Minimal records, DK records, LMR, showcasing an increasingly mature dance sound for the young and old!

In the meanwhile, in 2004, Aad & Peter also started bringing their music to clubs, doing a collaboration with Dutch DJ / Producer Stef Vrolijk. Throughout the year 2004 they performed as a live act in conjunction with the DJ-sets of Stef, playing at most of the big festivals and big gigs in Holland throughout the year.

They continued growing as producers and as Djs / live-act. Nowadays their music is played by all the relevant Djs in the world. The world of dance music (just like the world of religious choir music / country before) is at their feet. Watch out for the 16 Bit Lolita's in a club near you! It will be a spiritual experience!

FITALIC

Born and raised in The Hague at the west coast of the Netherlands, Robin got his first interest in music at the age of 12 when he started to learn electronic instruments.

After a few years, at the age of 18 he became interested in house music when he heard it being played at the local radio station in The Hague.

While out clubbing late one night in The Hague, Robin heard a talented DJ by the name of DJ Remy. Fuelling his interest in this very special sound, soon he started buying vinyl and learns the mixing techniques. In a short time he had gigs at some local school parties.

Although getting an excellent feel for the music, Robin still felt empty. After watched a live performance of the duo Pako and Frederik, Robin decided he want to perform his own music on stage too. Around 1998 he decided that he would take a different approach to things, bought his first set of production equipment, and began to produce his own music.

Two years later he had his debut release as Fitalic (maybe you’ll remember it: “Daytripper / Unbalanced”). The Hague could now add another name to its list of producers along with the likes of international greats such as, Sander Kleinenberg, DJ Remy, Pako & Frederik, and Roland Klinkenberg.

Influenced by these same great artists (and others) Robin has now had eighteen 12” releases, including releases on Bedrock (UK) and Vapour (AU). His tracks have been played by the likes of John Digweed, Kasey Taylor, Chris Fortier, DJ Remy, Sander Kleinenberg and Danny Howells. Just to name a few.

In the summer of 2002 Robin Fitter began to perform as a DJ and live-performance, with his close friend Andres Bink. Following the major name and success of his tracks, Fitalic could be seen performing across the globe, along side of the best in the biz. Adding to an already large amount of events and experience. Fitalic played with DJ’s like Thomas Penton, Seb Fontaine, Kasey Taylor, Infusion (live) DJ Remy, Pako & Frederik (live) and Fred Numf to name a few, in countries like Japan, Indonesia, Turkey, Greece, Canada, Mexico, Georgia, Denmark, Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands.

Currently working on tracks for various labels and just released his first album “ Atomic Atmosphere “ on Tribal Vision Records. Fitalic has easily become a much recognized and respected name in the biz.

Robin Fitter a.k.a. Fitalic is currently available for DJ, Live performance bookings and remix productions.

DJ GRIFF

Born on the 3rd of April 1970 in Amsterdam, Marco Greven began spinning records at the tender age of 15. His musical tastes are eclectic, from Mantronix, Boogie Down Productions to U2, Depeche Mode and The Talking Heads....In 1988 he started spinning Acid-House, and branched out to varying styles, from New York house to Detroit techno and Ambient; and in 1992 finally bought his first set of Technics SL-1200's, and thus began a DJ career. DJ Griff has been on and off the turntables for over 20 years now.

Spinning vinyl, Griff gets special attention for his seamless, artistic and smooth transitional style. His sound is an energetic and high-octane blend of deep, dark, sinister tribal techno (break) beats and big room anthems fused together to create an intense draught energy. This talent and professionalisme has taken him to Frisky Radio in 2002 where he is hosting The Deepest Level Show together with DJ @lias since 2005. Enjoy his deep progressive sound every third Thursday of the month.

MISS NINE

In the heavily male dominated DJ market, it is rare to find a female DJ who can create a huge impact on the scene in a short amount of time. Miss Nine has not only been able to outshine and make her presence known in such a world, but she has done so all within three years of picking up a record. With her eclectic taste in music, ranging from energetic grooves with plenty of vocals to a deeper, progressive sound, Miss Nine is sure to turn heads and move feet any where she performs.

Kristin Schrot began her career, not as a deejay, but as a model. At 16, she made it to the finals of one of the largest modeling pageants in Germany, and soon after secured a worldwide contract with Elite Model Management. Longing for more, her passion for music led Kristin to move to Amsterdam where she dubbed herself Miss Nine and began pursuing a career in the electronic industry.

Only three months after touching the decks for the first time, Miss Nine received her first gig during Queensday in Amsterdam on the Red Bull float. Shortly after, she became a resident DJ at the locally legendary Motion parties where she evolved as an artist and deejay while playing alongside masters such as John Digweed, Dave Seaman, Nick Warren, and James Zabiela. In 2003 she began touring abroad, playing at venues such as the illustrious Mambo Beach in Curacao, and even made an appearance as the youngest artist at the 10th edition of Dance Valley.

At the end of 2005, Miss Nine was asked to join Bullitt Bookings, the reputable agency of A-list deejays such as Deep Dish, Nic Fanciulli, and Danny Howells. This merger has allowed Miss Nine to explode onto the forefront of the DJ scene. Currently touring with Deep Dish, Miss Nine performs around the world, spinning at clubs such as Pacha in Ibiza, Space in Miami, Avalon in LA, Crobar in New York, and Ministry of Sound in London, with her fan base multiplying by the minute.

While enduring this exhausting tour schedule, Miss Nine still works fulltime as model for Elite. Modeling also takes her across the globe as the highlight of various photo shoots and ad campaigns for designers like Tommy Hilfiger, Armani, Lancome, Custo, and Pepe Jeans. She has appeared on the cover of several magazines, most notably Elle Magazine in Amsterdam.

Miss Nine is the first female to mix a compilation for Washington-based Yoshitoshi Recordings, the world-renowned leader in progressive and big-room house music. The highly anticipated Yoshitoshi Ibiza mixed by Miss Nine (YRCDLP15) was released in September 2006. Less than four months later the album reached the highest position at the iTunes Dance Album Chart in the USA: number 1!

Miss Nine will be touring worldwide in 2007, so make sure to catch the queen of the decks at a venue near you!

Eelke Kleijn

Eelke’s life has always been intrigued by modern technology. Being fascinated by everything related to science fiction and technological developments, his interests are anything but your usual cup of tea. He is currently getting a degree in biological psychology at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam. At home, his TV is tuned into Discovery Channel frequently. A real “Trekkie” perhaps as well, as he is a big fan of Star Trek. It is no surprise that Eelke enjoys watching the sky, not just on a warm summer day, but preferably at night, when he can aim his telescope at the stars and planets. It is not as severe as it sounds though, as he loves spending his free time playing video games and watching South Park. His biggest passion however is, without a doubt, music.

The world of music today is closely related to technology, something Eelke discovered at a young age. Therefore it is not strange at all that he got involved in it. “I could have easily ended up with an ICT related job”, he adds. Over the years Eelke has built and repaired a fair share of computers and also designed a variety of websites, including his own. At age 14, he got his first job working as a website designer for a music store. It gave him the opportunity to explore the studio equipment they sold in much detail, bringing home every piece of hardware he could get his hands on during the weekends.

In 2003 Eelke released his first single “4.5 Billion Years”, interestingly named after our planet's currently estimated age, on Segment Records. This very limited 12 inch drew the attention of John Digweed and Seb Fontaine and is still held in high regard up to this day. It opened the door to labels such as Lost Language and Plastik Park. It was not until early 2006 however, that Eelke would indefinitely make an impact on the dance scene. Many months spent in the studio resulted in a series of releases, the most noticeable probably being “8 Bit Era / Import Bride” on Baroque Records which was very well received and got included on Nick Warren's “Global Underground 030: Paris” compilation. “8 Bit Era” also received solid airtime on Dutch National radio. Ever since, many labels have taken notice of the sympathetic Dutchman, resulting in remixes for the likes of Jeff Bennett, Madoka and Snake Sedrick. In early 2007 his remix for Kosmas Epsilon's “Paranoid” was picked up by Hernan Cattaneo for his Renaissance compilation “Sequential 2”.

It is difficult to describe Eelke's sound in a few words though. “I am easily bored with music, I don't like recycling sounds and ideas all the time”, he explains. His almost trancy cooperations with fellow Dutchman C-Jay indeed are very different from the dark and twisted grooves he has produced with Nick Hogendoorn and again different from the ambient and chilled-out songs he has written himself. “As with my DJ sets, I need variety in order to remain interested in what I'm doing. Producing different styles is almost like a way to express the different moods I'm in”. The recent signing of '”Walkabout” on Ork Recordings with Nick is a perfect example, receiving critical acclaim from artists as diverse as Fish Go Deep, Nic Fanciulli and Anthony Pappa. Outside the Box Music, Eelke's label launched in 2006 and part of the Groovecollection Music Management, reflects his taste in music like nothing else, with releases varying from techno-edged minimal to funky progressive house.

Spring 2007 saw Eelke taking the next leap towards fulfilling his dreams. Months of labour finally paid off when his debut artist album 'Naturally Artificial' was snapped up by Global Underground. It did not take the guys at GU long to see its potential. “Needless to say I am extremely happy about it!”, he adds. “Global Underground is one of the labels that have been around since the beginning, you don't get a chance like this every day”.

So what else is there for Eelke you ask? We almost forgot to mention he is an excellent DJ as well, having played gigs in many European countries as well as Lebanon and Jordan. His monthly 2-hour radio show “Outside the Box”, broadcasted on Frisky Radio and Proton Radio, gives him the opportunity to showcase his sound worldwide. “What I love about Outside the Box is that I can do whatever I want”, he says. “It is almost like trying to educate people with different sounds, I can play deeper than at an average club night”.

Meanwhile Eelke has continued his work in the studio, a variety of news tracks and remixes are due throughout 2007. Success doesn’t come overnight, something we all know and this has also been the case with Eelke. Rest assured, though, that this is probably not the last we will hear from Mr. Kleijn.

Nick Hogendoorn

Nick started showing more interest in music than average at around the age of 10. Around this time, a neighbor who was a DJ played some tunes for Nick, mainly hardcore as this was the hot sound in 1993. But Nick decided that he preferred a less harsh sound and started buying more and more CDs and albums ranging from Eurodance to trance.

A couple of years later, Nick got in touch with a friend who had some old audio equipment in the attic, and they started experimenting with it to make some mixes for the very first time. They both loved it and decided to buy some real tools for the trade. When their first turntables arrived, they started to build their collection of vinyl, which eventually led to experimentation with music production on the very old Trackers for DOS.

Time flew by and Nick's tastes changed again, as he became more interested in electro, disco, and deep house tracks. While working part-time to get some extra cash for vinyl, he met someone at work who shared the same interest in music production, and he taught Nick the basics of music production. This led to Nick getting his very first production signed to Toes In The Sand Recordings, which also signed him to do a remix of Brahma's "Peaks of Destiny."

After a while, Nick hooked up with talented progressive producer Eelke Kleijn to collaborate on productions. The partnership has been fruitful, with tracks signed at Navigate Recordings, Arabica, Spinifex Recordings, Tilth Music, and more. The future looks bright for this talented young producer.

DJ @lias

Marco deMol was born in Rotterdam in 1971. Unlike other DJs at the time, he actually started DJ-ing with CDs instead of vinyl in 1994. But it was not until 2002 that he finally became serious about his talents as a DJ. Locking himself in the attic, he recorded set after set of deep, dark progressive with a techno-house vibe that came straight from his heart.

He joined the friskyCrew as a resident DJ in early 2002 after he mesmerised us with his hypnotic and unique style of mixing. This talent and professionalism has taken him to Frisky Radio in 2002 where he is hosting The Deepest Level Show, together with DJ Griff since 2005. Enjoy their deep progressive sound every third Thursday of the month.

Currently on a short "time-out" dj wise, but soon to be back on regular base, dropping beats like there's no tomorrow.

HARRY LEMON AKA LEMON8

After joining Armada with his Bandung imprint several years ago, Harry Lemon aka Lemon8 hasn't been all that productive apart from remixing virtually every track that Bandung Records released. He did however release 'Rise' and 'Tiga' under his own name Harry Lemon, which gave us a glimpse into what could be called a return to that trusty and so instantly recognizable sound he has become famous for.

Not in the least because of his affiliation and close relationship with Armada, Harry's sound changed somewhat into a more trancey feel. And while that did make new fans on a global scale, some people were wondering what was up next for the Dutchman so respected in the global dance scene.

Apart from that he also changed his name from Lemon8 into Harry Lemon, which didn't make things any more clearer. Of course, one have to keep in mind that Harry Lemon never subjected himself to one particular style or sound. So in itself, the lack of a label or stigma isn't an entirely new thing.

His first ever produced record 'Model8' for instance, is now being recognized as a landmark in techno and minimal and as such earned itself a re-release on Plus8 after 14 years. It's follow up 'The Bells Of Revolution' is somewhat becoming a House Classic as well and as his alter ego Jack Russell, he was at the forefront of what became known as 'filter disco'.

And at the start of the Millennium, Lemon once again transformed his sound with his Inner Sanctuary Sessions, only to become a reference to what progressive house should actually sound like, while at the same time building bridges between tech, trance and house. Former record shop colleague and trance DJ Tiesto started his Millennium gig at NYC's Time Square with 'New York, New York', while his double album 'The Inner Sanctuary Sessions' even won him the Best International Album at the Brazilian Cool awards beating even Coldplay (...)

With the Disco Demon Series we see Harry Lemon return to his Lemon8 style in sound, as well as in the name. In many ways it's a sequel to the Inner Sanctuary Sessions and from first impressions, it seems that Lemon has found his way back into a seemingly effortless stream of productivity shaking up dance floors and mp3 players in a grand scale.

As a DJ, his eclectic approach towards quality dance music is best appreciated during his sets. And while not being concerned with DJ hype lists, he still manages to create a vast amount of dedicated fans throughout the world. Lemon8 gigs are almost everywhere sell out events and often turn into 8 hours of dance floor bliss. And with his new globally broadcasted show on www.friskyradio.com, heaps of quality productions and a new album on the way, Lemon8 is really making 2007 his own.

NICK K

Of persian roots and settled down in Rotterdam, Netherlands, Nick Spent most time of his youth on the sport fields. unlike most dj's and producers today proclaim, Nick didn't have any musical background except occasionally buying early uk breakbeat/rave vinyls, and listening and dancing to 80's cheesy popmusic! it was only in early/mid 90's when the House fever finally got to him. sneaking in the clubs at the age of 16 and filling himself with the music that was beyond any description. This helped his musical talent to awaken enormously in no time and in fact, the love of this sound, drove him to drop out of early stages of a professional soccer career to pursue his new passion: MUSIC!

Nick Started his DJ-ing career back @ some small local clubs in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Playing Chicago and Detroit influenced house music, got noticed pretty quick as he became the resident @ the Danssalon, a trendy Rotterdam club at that time. After having a 2 year residency here, Nick became a resident at club Nighttown. First playing @ Future... fridaynights and then the legendary saturdaynights of club Nighttown, which was voted the best clubnight in the Netherlands for 2 years in a row, during his residency. Since that time Nick has played at numerous clubs in the Netherlands and all over the globe as well as all leading festivals in the Netherlands, along side some of the biggest names in the industry such as: Josh Wink, Laurent Garnier, Deep dish, Sander kleinenberg, Danny howells, Derrick May, Stacy Pullen, Darren Emmerson, Mr.C, 16B.

Nicks dj sets have a unique hypnotic sound full with excitement, best described as an adrenaline soaked trip to peak and back, through the house-territory. A sound that can not be categorized and definitely crosses boundaries. A sound which brings the most prominent house music elements together as his soulful, yet driving blend will take off. Tech, tribal, funk, deep, acid, dubby house-music that will result in most unexpected sets.

As a producer, Nick-k has been collaberating with names such as Ferry corsten and Sharam jey in the past and had releases on the legendary now defunct uk Labels Hoojchoons and Airtight as well as Deep dish imprints Yoshitoshi/Shinichi among others.

With his infectious sound, he slightly presented a different style which just took a short time to get noticed by top players ranging from Deep Dish and Steve Lawler to Carl Cox and Josh Wink. Nick has teamed up with Matthew dekay to set up Lowriders, folowing to their groundbreaking labeled imprint (lowriders recordings) which proved to be one of the freshest sounding labels in the industry, with supports from almost all top players. In 2006 Nick started working closely with Armada music on an own imprint called "Gangsta Audio". expect some twisted house monsters from Nick and other talented producers from across the globe in the future.

YAO

In real life, people call him Pepijn van der Linden. In Ghana though, they call him Yao, which means he was born on a thursday and the first born among his brothers. Yao was born and raised in Breda and caused his mother excruciating pains on november 15th 1979 ending with his parents still trying to figure out wether he’s a blessing or their biggest mistake ever.

With a father that is crazy about the Beatles (“house isn’t music”) and a mother that only listens to Enya and Leonard Cohen, it’s no wonder that no sooner than when he caught ‘Roodkapje’ on the radio he decided housemusic was coolest thing since toiletpaper with little elephants printed on it and Sesame Street.

Being hooked on basslines and warped vocal samples, Yao started creating his own ‘mixes’ on a shabby tapedeck and listening to a pirate radio station which broadcasted housemusic all day: he was too young to go to a club a that time but still remembers being blown away by Moby with ‘Go’ on the radio.

Even when he started visiting clubs this status quo lasted for years until he ran in to an old school friend who introduced him to DJ-ing. This good friend had already been spinning the decks for some 6 years, mainly techno. Watching him dj-ing triggered a yearning in Yao to actively start doing something with music too, instead of just listening and enjoying it. So when he got a go at it one day, he didn’t hesitate and tried his hands at mixing. Surprisingly, after a few terrible trainwrecks causing the mixer to start smoking and crackling he did seem to have a feeling for it. About 6 months later after saving every penny, he bought his own set.

That was in 2001…even though he did buy some trancey stuff in the beginning within months he switched to progressive and techno with electro and breaks added to the spectrum a little later, and that has been his deal ever since. Nothing affects him more than listening to and especially handling the music of his choice. “Music that touches me gives me the best high ever, there’s nothing that compares to it”.

Yao’s inspirators are to be found among the new generation upcoming DJ’s at this moment: Steve James, Chris Micali, Nigel Marcussen, Desyn Masiello, Hernan Cattaneo, Barish Turker, Rich Woods, Hafid Atzel, D-nox & Beckers and Holosound NYC are a few of them. In the end every DJ that really puts his heart into what he/she is doing will eventually appeal to him at some point.

Yao has been spinning at several parties until he was forced to sell his equipment to afford a ticket to Ghana in order to conduct research for his Master Thesis on corruption, economy and politics in Africa. He has also hosted his own show ‘Filth’ on MercurySessions (now Mcast) and has had a number of guest appearances on shows such as those found on friskyRadio for example. Having been out of the game for about a year, he hopes to acquire new gear by the end of this summer and has decided that in doing so he owes it to himself to give it a shot and see how far his passion for EDM can take him. However, he’ll be content if it pays him back the investment in his new gear ;-).

Bart Integro

Now, this could be a very long piece of text telling you a lot of stuff you really don’t need, or want to know. You know, a complete history piece which makes your history books look like short stories. But in your life you’ll get plenty of occasions where people will bore you, so we wont. Here’s just a little bit of information about Bart Integro.

Bart started collecting vinyl when he was 15, he will not tell you what he bought back then anymore because he is ashamed about even getting the idea that those songs were good. After about 2 years he developed some decent taste and bought his first Progressive House record. Since then he has been collecting anything from house to tech house and from deep, dark and dirty progressive house to mild funky techno. All of those in a big fat mixup is what you can expect from Bart Integro when playing in a club.

From October 2006 until April 2007 Bart took a total break from DJing to take the time to tour around Europe as a sound technician for one of the largest touring shows. After coming back from tour, the focus has not been on DJing, which now happens sporadically in his house, but on production and building various livesets.

Next to his own work as Bart Integro, Bart has two side projects for which he spends an awful lot of time in the studio these days. Here’s what he has to say about it himself: “Next to the things I produce under my own name, I’ve got two other project, those being “The Substitute People” which is just me really. With this I’m trying to create a more laidback sound, down tempo and a bit more organic. The other project is Camels On Duty, a project which sees me working together with Sancho (from Sancho & E-lation).”

When asking Bart when we can expect releases from his hand, it is quiet for a while, after which he replies: “I hope to release a few songs this year. I’ve got about 10 songs, which are almost finished and some 30 which are in the concept phase. They all still lack a certain something or are not up to my sound standards, let’s not forget I’m a sound technician. I hope to finish some stuff in the next few weeks but for the moment I’m a bit busy with my work as a sound technician.”

When we close the door to the studio, we hear some beats, basses and leads starting to play. If what we heard then is what we should go by, we should definitely watch out for Bart Integro’s tracks coming our way! For now, we will, as the man said it himself have to do with an occasional live set.

Until then: “Progress Is Everything”

Menno De Jong

Menno de Jong, Intuition. For some, it’s already a logical deduction. For those who haven’t heard of him this might be the opportunity to catch up on your DJ literature about the future of trance.

In the end the real action takes place behind the decks though: With a non-stop smile, energetic dancing and continuous contact with the audience he shares his passion for magic melodies and dance floor rocking beats.

With a number 14 notation in the worlds biggest trance site Trance Addict to top it off, Menno continues to be one of the ambassadors of the underground trance scene. All we can say is: Follow your Intuition, the music will do the rest!
